Diego (yellow) is a gorgeous 1 ½ year old Labrador. He and his brother and mom were found when the pups were only 6 months old and all three were roaming the west mesa. No one claimed them and the brothers were adopted together shortly after that. However, lifestyle changes in their new owner’s life caused them to be returned to us. One brother has been adopted, but Diego, the yellow lab, is still available and is looking for his perfect home. Diego has a goofy lovable nature. He also has separation anxiety since being separated from his brother. He will need a family that, when his people aren't home, and can't take him along (he's very well behaved in the car), can provide him with a well fenced yard with someplace to get in out of the cold, wet, and hot where he can't get at couches, phone books, Christmas ornaments, etc. He finds them, and things like them, endlessly tasty and satisfying in soothing his anxiety while you are gone. However, when you are home he is very very good.
Diego is playful but is obedience trained and minds well when given commands. He has those intelligent attentive adoring soulful Labrador eyes and that very waggy Labrador tail that swoops everything off the coffee table. Diego has the Labrador zest for life and will need an outlet for his youthful energy. He could happily hike all day, train for search and rescue, do advanced obedience or just be good company while you read or watch TV. Diego's previous owner was taking the brothers bicycling in the hills on weekends. The pups stayed with him well off leash unless they saw another dog and then they would race off to play. So, it sounds like Diego's recall is subject to squirrels and the like. Diego is now about 75#.
He had been recently tested for thyroid function, His thyroid is within normal parameters but is on the low end. Diego does have to watch his figure and diet. His new owners may have to check his thryroid every so often, but even if he would need thyroid meds, they are inexpensive.
Diego is house, doggie door, and crate trained. He has not spent alot of time with cats but seems OK with the foster home's cats. He needs owners who are experienced with Labs or other high energy breeds and who are willing to continue enforcing the existing training and provide plenty of exercise, a cozy fire and a soft rug or bed to curl up on at night. Diego will be happiest with a doggie sister or brother. However, the best canine match will be a steady mellow quiet older dog that will mentor him and help him to be calm and secure.
