This beautiful little 8-10 year old senior lady is Hannah. Hannah has had a rough life. You can see it in some scars under her fur and an old broken breast bone that was not treated. Recently Hannah found herself lost, thin, tired and alone. She was picked up by Valencia County Animal Control and spent a very distressing 10 days in the concrete kennel. The unforgiving concrete floor made her hurt all over until she could barely stand. Her spirit was bruised and her hair was matted with cactus and cockleburs that made sores in her skin. To add to the insult of being forsaken, she had some nasty intestinal bugs that she picked up while trying to find water and food. She had watery stool and had to lay in it and had become terribly depressed. Her eyes clouded over and she couldn’t summon the energy to move around much so the staff thought she needed a wheelchair.
But now Hannah is out of the pound, in rescue, is clean, and working her way back to good health. She has a warm soft bed to lay on and someone to love her. She has brightened up and is a new dog. She is galloping around in joy sometimes, but mostly walking and trotting out to feed the horses morning and evening. She enjoys laying in the sun intently watching and guarding. She is bright and happy, her eyes have cleared up a lot, and her wonderfully soft coat has taken on a new glow. She appears to smile sometimes, and although she does have cataracts, Hannah can still see well enough to get around well. She has some hind end weakness in her giddy-up so she needs help getting in the car. She did surprise her foster mom when she jumped out of the car on her own (she won’t be allowed to do that anymore!).
Hannah is most likely an English Shepherd. Not a well-known breed, the English Shepherd is a popular working farm dog similar to Border Collies and Australian Shepherds. They are calm dogs with good dispositions, floppy ears, long tails and big hearts, and a little softer looking than the other two similar breeds. Hannah is a wonderful loving senior girl who will devote herself to her person. Isn’t there someone out there who will take this fabulous old girl for her final years and give her all the love she deserves?
Hannah is currently in treatment for heartworm but she could go to a forever home as long as she was kept quiet and brought back for her remaining treatments (no cost to new guardian). This is one extra special girl and if some equally special person could open their heart to her, we guarantee that he or she will not be disappointed.
Rescue organizations depend on donations for the work they do, and since funds are limited, there are times that NMAF has to make tough choices. We cannot always take these needy, often expensive seniors in to the program. In this case a NMAF member sponsor stepped up to foot Hannah’s bills. The only reason Hannah is not a New Mexico Animal Friends dog is that her expenses were potentially high and we were not sure about her adoption potential. We didn’t know what a diamond in the rough she was. Hannah gets along with all dogs but not cats. Call Karon at 281-0330 to meet this sweet gentle old soul
