Welcome Princess Grace to the NMAF family! This little girl was rescued from a hoarding situation in February 2017 when her owner died and she found herself at Animal Humane, where in spite of their best efforts to help her, she simply could not overcome her fears. It wasn’t until Princess Peach (Peaches) came to the same shelter in March 2017, having been part of the same hoarding household, that Gracie began to show some response. Professional help from a Behaviorist did little to help Gracie come out of her fearful shell and it was thought she could never be adopted. A call to NMAF, has led both girls into a loving foster home, where lo and behold, their little personalities have begun to emerge. Fear does terrible things to animals and these girls just needed to be out of the Shelter. Princess Grace really is a true princess, a bit aloof as a Princess should be, elegantly beautiful at 17 pounds with her long legs and slender body, shiny black coat and speckled knee socks - which point to her heeler heredity. An adorable underbite tempers her beauty with humor. Within the first 24 hours in her new foster home, she was curling up next to her mom and now seeks physical contact freely whereas at the Shelter, she hid under anything she could find even though she was treated as a Princess with only love & kindness. She has bonded with a human that she now trusts and through daily walks to increase her confidence, along with conditioning exercises, is becoming more curious and comfortable in her new surroundings every day. She loves to sneak up behind you gently, if you sit on the floor in front of the couch and give soft kisses to your ear or just a whisper of a kiss to your hand in a quiet moment She is on the verge, after 1 week, of engaging in play with her foster brother, Tobey. Each morning after exiting her crate following a good long sleep, she is greeting the day with happiness - it is a joy to see in a dog who was so withdrawn.
Princess Grace will need a Forever Home where her owner(s) are willing to take the time and have patience to work with her and continue her development into a confident and well-rounded dog. Since she has been able to bond so quickly with her Foster Mom, we know this can be done again and NMAF is committed to assisting in that transition. While Princes Peach was a big part of her family and comfort at the Shelter, it does not appear they need to be adopted together though that would be nice.
Princess Grace is up to date on all shots, spayed, microchipped, is heartworm negative and on preventative. She is crate trained, and housetrained. She should have another dog in her home to help continue her confidence building, one who is gentle and loving. A Princess, this girl will always be and like the story of Cinderella, Gracie knows it will get better - just you wait and see!
