Velvet, aptly named for her thick and velvety black coat, came to NMAF as a stray from a local rural shelter. It only took one touch for her foster mom to give her the name Velvet, as her coat is soft, dense, and shiny. The shelter had listed her as a Pomeranian mix, which is possible, but she is much larger (we estimate between 15 & 20 pounds) and long-legged. Schipperkes, a Belgian breed, seem to match her better than Pomeranian, including her temperament, though there is definitely something else mixed in. What a fun DNA experiment she will make! Schipperkes are affectionate, smart (though not necessarily easy to train), and require regular exercise. They are also good with children, though we have not had an opportunity to test that. A better weight will be obtained when she is spayed and receives the rest of her medical requirements, including a heartworm test. She is a self-possessed little girl, quiet and calm, and gets along with the other dogs in her foster home. Cats are unknown. She is well-mannered and easy to have around. Once she is spayed, she may be ready to go to her Furrever Home by Christmas as long as she is kept quiet a few more days. In order to meet her, an application is required.
