Nino - Adopted!
Nino was picked up as a stray in early May and ended up at the Albuquerque city shelter. The city transferred him to NMAF at the big Fetchapalooza adoption event and now the lucky boy is in a great foster home. We don't know anything about his previous home, but his foster mom and dad have the following to say about him:
Nino is an affectionate and smart little dog (maybe 10-11 lbs) who's probably been through a lot. He is very lively boy, with lots of energy. He's happy and excited in our back yard, and he hit it off with our other dog right away- they're getting along well and occasionally they run and play. He walks on a leash pretty well, with occasional lapses into a possible sled dog past. He should be on a harness when being walked because he can slip out of a collar, he can get so excited. He already has the park concept. He is very friendly and outgoing to people and other animals.
The shelter said he was about 9 years old, but he doesn't act like an old dog at all and it's likely that he's a couple years younger. That estimate may have been based on the condition of his teeth - the shelter extracted 8 teeth in early May. He is not a gratuitous barker--which is great for a little dog! He seems to understand a few basic "requests", like stay. He seems very healthy except for his teeth and he will need a little special attention as far as dietary concerns go, because he cannot chew the dry kibbles well. He is doing fine with what we're giving him, which is sauteed ground turkey with finely minced steamed vegetables, mixed with moistened, softened up kibbles. Yum!
Nino is neutered and has been vaccinated. He is microchipped and has been tested for heartworm. He's a happy, friendly, sweet-tempered little guy who'll bring his new family a lot of fun and joy!
