Sophie - Adopted!
Call Karon at 281-0330 for information about Sophie.
We really don’t know Sophie’s breed but she is a beautiful 50# dog with a wonderful soft coat and soul searching mascara lined eyes. Probably an Australian Shepherd crossed with a shepherd or black mouth cur or ???. In 2013 Sophie was found lying on the side of a road in western Oklahoma with chemical burns and a mangled foot. She had had a litter and had probably been thrown out for the trouble. The Oklahoma rescue tried to heal her foot with traditional bandaging and keeping her in a crate. After failing they passed her on to another rescue in Santa Fe who tried herbs and such. Finally that rescue decided to amputate her foot and got in touch with local contacts in Albuquerque. The veterinarian here, Good Shepherd, wanted to save the foot, of course, and after two surgeries and months of recuperation with the current foster, Sophie is back with four on the floor once again. After all that this dog has endured, she remains an outgoing lovable pooch.
Sophie is a moderately dominant female and can be high energy when playing outside. She would do best with a medium/large easy going, secure dog, preferably male. She could easily be an only dog. She adores people and cuddling. Due to all the medical handling, Sophie has learned to lay happily upside down in a person’s lap and have her belly stroked. She has started some rudimentary training and will always need a handler who sets the limits. She can be a bit strong willed. Currently she sits, lies down, and sits up. We have been working hard on “wait” and on leash walking manners. She is coming along but still has her strong moments. Her house manners are great. She uses a doggie door to come and go inside/outside. She is calm and quiet in the house. She goes to her bed and stays there happily. She loves her stuffed animal toys and often takes them to bed for company. She appears to be house broken (we use doggie doors). Sophie also loves to go in the car and is a great traveler and a quiet companion on rides.
Sophie will probably always limp as a result of the trauma to her front foot. She probably cannot be a hiking or jogging companion but can definitely enjoy unrestricted yard play. She does have a boot she can wear but around home she does not use it. Active children will probably raise the energy level of this dog too much and are not recommended. We would like to see her placed in a calm stable environment.
Sophie’s birthdate is probably sometime in 2012. She is spayed, up to date on her shots and would love to meet you.
