How would you like to wake up buried in everyone's trash?! Well, that is exactly where seven little puppies found themselves every day. These precious little pups had either been dropped off at the South Valley Landfill at Coors and Pajarito or they were the offspring of the many dogs that roam freely out there.
One of NMAF's volunteers had done some rescues at that landfill previously. One of those rescues was a very friendly, sweet pit bull that had a 38 caliber bullet in his leg. He was rescued, treated, then adopted into a loving home.
NMAF got a call a couple of weeks ago saying that there was a litter of pups at the landfill. We drove out there and found several little heads staring at us from a pile of debris. They were too skittish to be caught except for one of the pups. That poor little pup was so sickly that she couldn't even put up a fight. She was quickly caught and put into a comfy crate with some water. She gulped down the water like she had never had a drop in her life. The estimated age of this pup, as well as her littermates, was 7 weeks old.
It took many trips to trap these little guys and gals. Finally the last one was caught.
Fortunately, the pups were caught at a young enough age to begin the process of socialization. They are doing well. They are learning to be carefree pups. They pounce, they run, they tumble just like healthy pups should.
NMAF will now begin the process of getting as many adult dogs spayed and neutered at the landfill as possible.
