Little Ellie has had a tough time of it lately - life has thrown her a lot of foul balls, but she has come through it like a champ! In early August she was hit by a car and taken to the kind vets at Rte 66 Veterinary Emergency Center who treated the multiple fractures, lacerations, and abrasions she had suffered. Still, her little spirit shown through, and she survived the surgery and was transferred to Albuquerque's Animal Welfare Department - Eastside to recuperate. Two microchips previously implanted did not lead to an owner so she spent many long weeks just healing. Careful medical care, pain medications, and kindness helped her recover, and in late September she was finally ready to go up for adoption. NMAF found her at PetSmart, frightened by the new environment and very thin from her long weeks of waiting. She was irresistible and her story cried out to her new foster mom who scooped her up immediately, being rewarded with a shower of kisses. Ellie is incredibly sweet & loving and is social with other small dogs. At 5 years old and less than 7 pounds currently, she is not a puppy and needs a quiet home with good food to help her regain strength and weight. She will never be a hiker, runner or agility candidate, but given time and care she should enjoy walks again. She is walking well now and her mobility is good. Her hips will never be perfect and she may suffer from residual pain and a limp from time to time, but that is also easily treatable. Most of us over 50 deal with that all the time... She would be a perfect companion for a senior or senior couple looking for a loving little dog to share their home. She should not live with small children or bigger dogs that could accidentally step on her. Ellie is truly a survivor and we are grateful for the care given to her to help her find the next chapter of her life. She is up-to-date on all vaccinations, heartworm tested (negative), has a new microchip and also a recent dental. Now she just needs time & love and, of course, you!
Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
