You have heard the phrase "Looks can be deceiving"? Well, Billie is the perfect example of that phrase! Looking at his pictures below, you would say he is shy and fearful, telling you "please don't look at me"!! Get him in his foster home environment and he is a completely different dog - playful, scampering around with his new buddy Winston, getting into mischief at every opportunity - a happy little guy! Billie, as well as his brother Willie, were extremely shy of humans when they came to NMAF from a rural shelter where they found themselves after being picked up as strays. We have no other information beyond that. It took time for them to adjust, Billie coming along faster. Once they were separated into different foster homes, both have made great progress in dog and human socialization. Billie's foster mom calls him a little hooligan - he is always looking for some form of mischief to get into! Leave your shoes out - Billie will remind you not to... Have your sweater on a chair, he just might claim it for his own! Billie is a young pup and still has that puppy energy and inquisitiveness. He is still shy of new people but, given time and another young playful dog in his Furever Home, he will come around. Super smart and cute as a button, whatever Terrier mix he is, is NOT hypoallergenic, so please don't inquire if you are seeking a hypoallergenic dog. Billie should not be an only dog and would do best with playful doggy playmates near his own size. He will take time and patience to adjust to new surroundings, and training/coaching will be provided. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots, and microchipped.
Billie would do best in a home without young children as he is skittish and shy at first. His doggy brother(s) or sister(s) will show him the way to adjust and help his family see what a bright and happy little guy he is. Trust is one of the hardest things to build in a dog, but Billie has shown he can do it and will continue to improve in the right environment. NMAF can also offer professional trainer options to help with socialization & training.
If you are interested in meeting Billie, please complete an application and email it to dogs@nmaf.org. There is no commitment or guarantee for adoption, but your application allows for screening before setting up a meet & greet with his foster.
Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
