FINAL SELECTION WILL BE BASED ON A NUMBER OF CRITERIA, INCLUDING WHAT IS BEST FOR EACH PUPPY.
Bunny, our sweet little Mama, who came from a rural NM shelter where she was to be put down before her babies could be born, produced 7 healthy pups on January 19th, 2020. All 7 babies survived due to her wonderful mothering skills, though nursing so many pups caused her to develop Eclampsia, a severe and potentially fatal condition, at 3.5 weeks post birth. The puppies had to be split into 2 foster homes to decrease the strain on her. She is now recovering and regaining weight. The puppies are all doing fine - growing like weeds and eating puppy mush. At 4.5 weeks, they range in size from a little over 2 pounds to over 4 pounds. They are playing with each other now and with toys and getting plenty of human socialization. Their little personalities are emerging and they are so much fun to watch!
Bunny's puppies will be available for placement at 8 weeks of age (week of March 15th). They will have had their first puppy vaccination (DA2PP) at that point and will require 3 more along with spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, and microchip (done at 4 months of age). They will go through the NMAF adoption process, but their adoption will not be final until all shots, microchip, and spay/neuter are completed (which NMAF will pay for).
Puppy adoptions are taken very seriously at NMAF because there are so many requirements to raise a healthy, well-adjusted puppy - just like a human child - the time you put in when they are little reaps rewards as they reach adulthood. With the young age of these puppies, continued socialization, especially with other dogs and puppies, is critical to them growing up to be well-rounded adults. A Puppy Addendum will be signed at the time of adoption & placement that spells out additional requirements for both Puppy Daycare & Puppy Training Class. Potential adopters need to consider this additional expense when applying for a puppy. Depending on if there are other dogs in the home, the requirements may vary. Resource options will be provided. It is our goal to have these puppies stay in their first home without being returned to NMAf at 1-2 years of age, unsocialized and out of control.
Due to the small size of these little ones, they will not be placed in homes with children under 6 years of age and who are not dog savvy. Preference will be given to families that have other playful and tolerant dogs and have someone that can be home during the day. Puppies cannot be crated all day nor penned by themselves. Potty training, which begins at 12-16 weeks, needs consistency throughout the day.
Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
