Lucy's story is one that will blow your mind - this little girl has been to hell and back and survived a pain-filled, harrowing experience, yet still has a life-force that is alive and well. Brought to the shelter in late April, she was in labor, supposedly for 2 days, trying to birth a puppy that was much too large for her. At just over 7 pounds, this girl is tiny! The person surrendering her was suspicious, giving multiple, disconnected stories that she had been found as a stray, but certain things did not add up. The shelter recognized Lucy's distress and arranged for x-rays, and once it was confirmed a large puppy was still inside of her, an emergency C-section and hysterectomy was performed. The puppy had already perished, but little Lucy was saved. If left to continue trying to birth the pup, she would have surely died. Just after being posted as available for adoption one week later, someone tried to adopt her that had the same address as the one that dumped her in her distress. The shelter caught it and refused to let her go and she came to rescue that same day with NMAF. We now have all that information and will be very careful to ensure she does not go back from where she came.
Lucy took a little time to warm up in foster care - shy at first, she has come out of her shell and now decided she is Queen of the Castle. She likes to keep her foster mom all to herself, not unusual for a little dog who has been through so much. We do believe she may be best as an only dog, with someone older and living a quiet life - no small children. She can learn to "share" a mom & dad and is learning that she can't always get her way. She has a ton of personality, loves to snuggle, burrow under pillows, and play "dress-up" as you can see in her photos. She also likes to "pose" for pictures. She is completely vetted, having all her shots, microchip, spayed, and heartworm tested (negative). She will need a family or person willing to give her the time and attention she needs to blossom and live a happy, safe life. She deserves it!
If you are interested in meeting Lucy it can be arranged, but we require an application first, which can be found here. Please send it to the person & email address listed above.
Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
