UPDATE: Mia is doing great! She has begun her physical therapy sessions in earnest and is the star pupil at Ace of Paws here in ABQ. She is receiving acupuncture and hydrotherapy - working on a treadmill underwater! Her foster parents say she is standing a lot more and is really peppy, loving her toys and pets. She is gaining core strength which is what she needs to get to walking. Thanks to all who have contributed to her medical needs - we so appreciate it! Each P/T session is $120+, so every bit helps! More updates to come soon.
Mia Michaels really just wants to dance!!! Named after the judge on "So You Think You Can Dance" by the kind staff at the county shelter, Mia was found dumped on the mesa with her brother still at her side, paralyzed in her hind end, dragging her bloodied legs behind her. Her ears were a mass of red, angry flea bites. She stayed at the shelter for over a month, healing and undergoing some exams and x-rays to see what was going on. Other diagnostic tests, such as an MRI, were beyond what the shelter could afford. They even found a donor for a little wheeled cart which came with her when she transferred to NMAF. While other rescues were approached, no others stood up to take her, and knowing she would have a very hard time getting adopted and expecting a large expense to have her condition evaluated, we took her anyway. This little girl is a true survivor with a loving and happy spirit, and she has blossomed in foster care. Her wounds are all healed, though she still drags her legs behind her to get around indoors, travels around the yard in her wheelchair or sling so she can potty. We recently had her evaluated and an MRI done at the Animal Neurology & Imaging Center in Algodones, which determined that surgery was not needed at this time. Physical therapy was recommended and her first evaluation and session has occurred locally at Ace of Paws in Albuquerque. The prognosis is that with additional physical therapy and home exercises to strengthen muscles, there is a strong possibility she will be able to walk again, though it will never be as smooth or energetic as a young dog would typically be. She will resume P/T after she completes a course of antibiotics for a particularly severe UTI she is now recovering from. Water/treadmill therapy is one of the exercises that can help her, and multiple sessions are expected.
Her expenses to date have exceeded $4300, and we expect more to come as her physical therapy sessions increase. If anyone would like to contribute to her care, donations can be made through our website. Anything would be appreciated! Stay tuned as updates on her condition will be published, and check out the videos of her first time in the wheelchair as well as her first walk in the neighborhood.
Mia is available for adoption and a meet & greet can be arranged with a completed application. Please complete an application and send it to the person listed above. Mia will need a very special family, one familiar with special needs animals and who are willing to provide the care she will continue to need, but it will be worth it. She deserves a happy and loving life after all she has endured. She is up-to-date on all shots, spayed, microchipped, and heartworm tested (negative).
Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
