Newton is one cute little dude, especially now that he is groomed and smelling sweet. A part of a hoarding case from the Bernalillo County Shelter, Newton had clumps of poop hanging from him when he came to NMAF and smelled like a garbage dump! Two baths and a haircut later, this handsome little boy emerged! He is settling into foster home life, and we have learned some things about him recently to update his biography.
Not uncommon for dogs in a hoarding situation, Newton can be reactive to other dogs in his home if they invade his "space" or he gets startled, and we now know he doesn't do cats, either. He is very sweet with people and loves to be the center of attention. At this point, we believe he should probably be an only dog or, if living with another dog, it should be one that is much bigger and immune to his outbursts. We have also had him examined by a veterinarian to learn more about his heart murmur in preparation for his dental on March 23rd. NMAF had a full blood panel done (all normal results) and x-rays of his heart and internal organs. He is diagnosed with possible Acquired Mitral Valve Disease, a condition quite common in older, small breed dogs. It will require follow-up to verify. His heart is not enlarged, nor is he in congestive heart failure at this point. His heart is functioning properly but with a systolic murmur in the left ventricle. His ideal family would be one where he can lead a semi-quiet life (a nice retired couple or single??) and have the medical oversight he needs to thrive for the remainder of his years.
Newton is up-to-date on all shots, microchipped, and heartworm test negative. He can be met in his foster home outside of our regular Saturday adoption clinics (cancelled currently due to Coronavirus), so please contact the person above if interested. We believe he is a purebred Yorkie and, at just under 8 pounds, a little guy, though he could stand to gain a little weight. He has years of life yet to enjoy and deserves a cushy life after what he has lived through.
Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
