Meet pretty little Miss Sugar! You would not know it to look at her current photos where she really looks like a blonde Doxie, but this girl has "curls" galore when her hair grows out. We did not recognize her at the shelter the day we met her with her coat all shaved, having seen her "before" photo online. Good thing is, it will grow back and she will be as cute as can be! Poor Sugar turned up at the ABQ Shelter, found as a stray, with large mammary tumors and a condition called cherry eye. The shelter spayed her and took care of the tumors. Once she is better from her kennel cough, she will return to have the eye surgically corrected.
Sugar is very sweet and loves being wherever her foster family is, lying quietly in her bed nearby. She sleeps nicely in a crate at night but does not like being there when left alone. At 20 pounds, she has the build of a Dachshund but the coat of a Poodle mix. Sugar is what is called "dog selective" and much more people centric than dog centric. She can be reactive to another dog she does not know. Though she has a canine sister in her current foster home, it was rocky at first. We believe she may be better suited to being the only dog where she can have her favorite human(s) all to herself. She would be a perfect companion for an active senior or empty nest couple who enjoy taking walks, travel, and want a furry companion. Cats are an unknown.
Once her hair grows out, Sugar will be a dog that needs regular grooming to keep her looking her absolute best. At 20 pounds, she is not too small, not too big, and appears to be at an ideal weight for her breeds right now. She is up-to-date on all shots, spayed, microchipped, and heartworm tested (neg). Come meet this sweet girl at PetSmart on Academy, Saturdays, or arrange to meet her in her foster home.
Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.
