This is a very special boy that won our hearts over at first sight. NMAF did a large rescue of dogs that were left behind when their owner suddenly died in the small village of Ft. Sumner, NM. Flipper, as well as one of his siblings, had a severe case of luxating patellas. They had been born with their kneecaps out of their sockets, which gave them a very bent over posture because they could not straighten their back legs. Their back legs were so bent that they could barely keep their back ends from dragging on the ground. They were going to be euthanized in Ft. Sumner. When we heard about them, we immediately went to Ft. Sumner to rescue them.
Flipper has since had his corrective surgery and is doing great! His kneecaps were put back into their sockets and his legs straightened out as much as possible. He will always have his special gait, but that just makes him extra special.
From the beginning, you could see that he was a happy little fellow. He didn't let his disability stop him. Before his surgery, he was able to get around, but his condition would have deteriorated over time. Now, he will live a long life and gets around better than ever.
Flipper gets along with other dogs. He loves to play with dogs, as well as toys and his family.
You can see one of his "before" pictures when he was in the makeshift shelter in Ft. Sumner. He was living in bad conditions and deserved a much better life. You can also see a picture of him in a crate on transport day when he was rescued. All of the rest were taken in his current foster home.
