Smokey - Adopted!
PLEASE NOTE: This dog is a courtesy listing only and is neither connected to nor being offered for adoption through NMAF.
Smokey is a very handsome, smart 2-year-old blue Australian Cattle Dog mix. He walks very well on leash and loves to play fetch and tug. He knows how to "drop it" for the next throw of the toy. He knows sit and stay, especially for yummy treats. He loves conversations and attention. After play and "learning" sessions, he likes to sit next to a person and leans into them. We don't know why, but he does not like children so should go to an adult-only home. His original owner, a man, had to surrender him even after getting an OK from his landlord when he first moved in . Later he was told Smokey looked like a Rottweiler (a Rottweiler--must be the brown eyebrows!!!!) and they were not allowed in the apartments. He does not care for some men due to an unfortunate encounter with one man who treated him roughly. He loves men who are patient and not intimidating. He has never tried to jump the fence in the play yard but does need at least a 5-foot fence at home if he's unattended for long. After all, he's a young and athletic dog. He seems to be good with other dogs and even with cats, although it's always good to supervise new pets just to make sure. He does not like being in the small kennel at the shelter and will bark for attention or if someone pounds on the kennel door. That is the only time he seems to bark. He absolutely will not go potty in his kennel and always does his business immediately when taken out. Out of the kennel environment he will sit to have his leash put on and is quite calm. He rides well in the car. He has been at the eastside Albuquerque shelter since March 16, 2011 and his number is A 1611746. He is neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative and vaccinated. He is ready-to-go to his new forever home. He would love someone who takes walks, jogs, hikes or has a big yard to play fetch. He would appreciate someone who will talk to him and continue to teach and challenge him to learn new things. Call the city at 311 or 768-1975 or go see him at the eastside Albuquerque shelter on Lomas just east of Wyoming Blvd.
